Can Wii Sports Resort Save Nintendo?

The Wall Street Journal has an article about the Wii sales slump that’s going on. While some folks think a price cut could turn it around, I think Wii Sports Resort is going to be the game that puts the cash into Nintendo’s coffers. Here’s some select words from the article:
Nintendo Co. said its profit plunged more than 60% in the fiscal first quarter as sales of its hit Wii videogame consoles collapsed in the U.S. and elsewhere on a shortage of new blockbuster games to reel in recession-hit consumers. Nintendo said it sold 2.2 million Wii consoles in the quarter, less than half the 5.2 million it sold in the same period a year earlier. In the Americas alone, sales slid by nearly two-thirds to 880,000 consoles, while Wii sales in Japan were 21,000, less than half the same quarter last year.
Nintendo hopes the release of its ‘Wii Sports Resort’ game, shown above, will reignite sales of its Wii console. Nintendo said there were “fewer blockbuster software titles that briskly drove hardware sales” in the quarter compared with the year ago period. The company also said it still expects to sell 26 million Wii consoles in the fiscal year through March 2010. The company is targeting a significant sales boost from its new “Wii Sports Resort” game, launched in Japan at the end of June, in the U.S. July 26 and in Europe July 25.
