Wii, PS3 Sales In Dead Heat In Japan [Console Taisen]

This week’s report from Japanese sales tracker Media Create shows that recent price drops on Nintendo’s Wii and Sony’s PlayStation 3 are having nearly equal impact on sales of each console, a slight edge going to the PS3.

A curious tie, we suppose, as Wii Sports Resort and Wii Fit Plus continue to sell better than the PlayStation 3 competition. But less curious is the continued dominance of the Nintendo DSi and PSP, both doing just fine on the software and hardware front.

For the bestselling console hardware in Japan for the week of October 5 to 11, look down.

  • Nintendo DSi – 50,144
  • PSP – 40,100
  • PlayStation 3 – 30,896
  • Wii – 30,741
  • Nintendo DS Lite – 5,454
  • Xbox 360 – 3,326
  • PlayStation 2 – 2,133

Wii Fit Plus Takes Japan by Storm [Sales Get]

The release of Wii Fit Plus has been met with open arms in Japan. The newest Wii Balance Board-powered fitness game from the house of smiles sold more than 340,000 copies in its first week on sale.

It was a good week for Nintendo platforms, with Level 5′s soccer RPG sequel Inazuma Eleven 2: Kyoui no Shinryokusha scoring the second place spot, an impressive 280,000-plus copies moved week one. It was also the first week that Square Enix’s Dragon Quest IX didn’t appear in the top ten since its release in Japan. It was pushed out by four new PSP and PS3 releases.

Yeah, that’s right. It was also a very good week for Sony’s platforms, with Gran Turismo and Macross Ultimate Frontier for the PSP making appearances at the top of the chart. Also showing strong (enough) were Ninja Gaiden Sigma 2 and Shin Sangoku Musou: Multi Raid Special for the PlayStation 3.

Looks like sales tracker Media Create is now clumping together sales of Pokemon Heart Gold and Soul Silver. Probably for the best!

August NPDs: Madden Sales Down, But Still the Top

Madden NFL 10

It’s almost not even worth noting anymore that the industry is in decline. This makes the sixth month in a row we’ve seen a decrease, but there are signs of the games business getting back some steam as we finish out the year. This month’s decline had a lower impact than recent months, which means the decline could be slowing. Sony’s mid-month price drop spurred sales of the console to nearly match the Xbox 360, even as some eager buyers were no-doubt waiting for the Slim launch this month. The dueling Xbox 360 and PS3 price cuts should make for an interesting September. Nintendo, as usual, topped the list with combined sales of the Wii and DS that beat all of the other systems put together.

August 2009 Hardware Sales

  • Nintendo DS — 552,900
  • Wii — 227,400
  • Xbox 360 — 215,400
  • PlayStation 3 — 210,000
  • PlayStation Portable — 140,300
  • PlayStation 2 — 105,900

July 2009 Hardware Sales

  • Nintendo DS — 538,900
  • Wii — 252,500
  • Xbox 360 — 202,900
  • PlayStation Portable — 122,800
  • PlayStation 3 — 121,800
  • PlayStation 2 – 108,000

Software sales for the month carried some heavy hitters, particularly Madden NFL 10 which saw combined sales of almost 2 million units. Wii Sports Resort squeezed in a spot comfortably between the two major Maddens; it sold 500,000 in just five days last month, so if it had been released in early August instead it might have taken the top spot from the football franchise. The PlayStation 2 crowd for Madden is starting to die down, finishing in sixth place this year. Both versions of Batman: Arkham Asylum topped it, and while the Joker challenge rooms weren’t quite enough to put the PS3 version on top, the two finished surprisingly close given the difference in install bases.

Bloomberg reports that EA CEO John Riccitiello said it is “discouraging that one of our highest-rated and best-marketed ‘Madden’ titles in years is facing strong headwinds.” He doesn’t sound too pleased with the sales, but at least no one will be getting free copies of Wolfenstein. The shooter didn’t even crack the top 10, and was beaten out by Fossil Fighters.

UK Charts: Batman is better than Wii Sports Resort

Batman: Arkham Asylum is a great game. What’s more, it’s a great game at the top of the UK Chart, a position usually reserved for bad games that the idiotic general public lap up. This almost qualifies as a paradox, and I’m fairly certain…
